Hello, guys! How are you doing? It's a short week here in Argentina, because of Easter Holidays. I need those extra resting days SO MUCH.
You're probably wondering why I'm not writing about books. Well, technically, dictionaries are books, so HA! One of my professors just sent us some articles to read for our class and one of them was about misspelled words that are accepted in a Spanish Dictionary. They're cringe-worthy, and since most of you can't understand Spanish, you'll have to take my word for it. Anyway, this got me thinking and I decided to find some unusual words that appear in dictionaries to share with you. Shall we?
Antejentacular: before breakfast
Bezoar: a small hard, solid mass which may form in the stomachs of animals such as goats or sheep (not so unusual for Harry Potter fans)
Cockamamie: ridiculous; incredible
Doryphore: a pedantic and annoyingly persistent critic of others
Eucatastrophe: a happy ending to a story
Floccinaucinihilipilification: the action or habit of estimating something as worthless
Gasconade: extravagant boasting
Humdudgeon: an imaginary illness
Inunct: to apply ointment to someone or something
Jumentous: resembling horse's urine
Kenspeckle: Scottish conspicuous or easily recognizable
Logomachy: an argument about words
Merkin: an artificial covering of hair for the pubic area
Netizen: a habitual or keen user of the Internet (me)
Onolatry: the worship of donkeys or asses
Panurgic: able or ready to do anything
Rubricate: to add elaborate capital letters (typically red ones) or other decorations to a manuscript
Sesquipedalian: (of a word) having many syllables or (of a piece of writing) using many long words
Triskaidekaphobia: extreme superstition about the number thirteen
Umbriferous: shady
Velleity: a wish or inclination which is not strong enough to lead one to take action
Winebibber: a heavy drinker
Xenology: the scientific study of extraterrestrial phenomena
Ylem: (in big bang theory) the primordial matter of the universe
Zetetic: proceeding by inquiry or investigation
I still can't believe 90% of those words exist.
I hope you found it interesting! And if you didn't, you at least have to admit that some of them are quite funny.
See you next time!
How do people come up with new words? Have you ever invented one? Let me know!
