Underrated Series

Hi guys! I was looking at my Goodreads read books list the other day and when I saw some of my all time favorite series I noticed that most of them aren't really popular. So, I figured I could share them with you so you can enjoy them as much as I did and get the recognition they deserve. Sounds good?

I picked my top 4 trilogies or series so I don't bore you.

The Tomorrow series by John Marsden

When I was about 15 or 16 I saw this movie called Tomorrow When the War Began and I have been obsessed with it ever since. It's about a group of teenagers who come back from a camping trip and find that their town has been invaded and their families are hostages. So these kids have to suddenly mature and find a way to fight back. It's so good! I always felt this rush of adrenaline whenever I saw it and my adolescent self wanted to do something reckless like kick a garbage can or something. Eventually, after like the fifth time I saw it, I found out that it's based off a book; a series of books in fact. A tv show was also released last year based off of them, but I think there's only one season available. If I'm being honest, I haven't read all of them, but I have loved the ones I did read. I can't remember why I stopped, but I definitely will get back to them. I absolutely recommend them.

When Ellie and her friends return from a camping trip in the Australian bush, they find things hideously wrong — their families are gone. Gradually they begin to comprehend that their country has been invaded and everyone in their town has been taken prisoner. As the reality of the situation hits them, they must make a decision — run and hide, give themselves up and be with their families, or fight back.

Across the Universe by Beth Revis

This is a trilogy set in space, obviously. I read these when I was, again, 15 o 16 (It was my best reading period) and loved them. It's about life in a spaceship that is on its way to an inhabitable planet. It kinda reminds me of the movie with J-Law and C-Pratt. Or the movie reminds me of these books. Everything seems to be fine until some mysteries come to light. I'm so not good at telling what books are about. They're sooo good. I promise. Plus, how pretty is that cover?

Seventeen-year-old Amy joins her parents as frozen cargo aboard the vast spaceship Godspeed and expects to awaken on a new planet, three hundred years in the future. Never could she have known that her frozen slumber would come to an end fifty years too soon and that she would be thrust into the brave new world of a spaceship that lives by its own rules.
Amy quickly realizes that her awakening was no mere computer malfunction. Someone—one of the few thousand inhabitants of the spaceship —tried to kill her. And if Amy doesn't do something soon, her parents will be next.
Now Amy must race to unlock Godspeed's hidden secrets. But out of her list of murder suspects, there's only one who matters: Elder, the future leader of the ship and the love she could never have seen coming.

Monument 14 by Emmy Laybourne

Now these books are filled with intrigue, action and kickass children. I don't remember how or when I came across these books but I'm so glad I did. I'm not a fan of books whose main characters are kids (they tend to annoy me), but I learned to love these smart little devils. I always find it fascinating when teenagers have to step up and behave like adults, specially if they have to suddenly be in charge of a whole group of scared children. That's what happens here, after a toxic gas is released in the air. I still have to read the third book but I'm so pumped.

Your mother hollers that you're going to miss the bus. She can see it coming down the street. You don't stop and hug her and tell her you love her. You don't thank her for being a good, kind, patient mother. Of course not-you launch yourself down the stairs and make a run for the corner.
Only, if it's the last time you'll ever see your mother, you sort of start to wish you'd stopped and did those things. Maybe even missed the bus.
But the bus was barreling down our street, so I ran.

Fourteen kids. One superstore. A million things that go wrong.

When Dean raced out the door to catch the school bus, he didn’t realize it would be the last time he’d ever see his mom. After a freak hailstorm sends the bus crashing into a superstore, Dean and a group of students of all ages are left to fend for themselves.
They soon realize the hailstorm and the crash are the least of their worries. After seeing a series of environmental and chemical disasters ravage the outside world, they realize they’re trapped inside the store.
Unable to communicate with the ones they love, the group attempts to cobble together a new existence. As they struggle to survive, Dean and the others must decide which risk is greater: leaving… or staying.

Shadow Falls series by C.C. Hunter

A lot of things can go wrong in a series filled with vampires, werewolves, witches, etc. However, this is one of the few paranormal series I have actually loved. I have previously talked about them in a post, but I can't remember which one. What I do remember, is saying how quickly I read them (devoured might have been the word I used to describe it.)  Filled with potential love interests, funny best friends and a couple of enemies, you'll fall in love with every character, I promise.

One night Kylie Galen finds herself at the wrong party, with the wrong people, and it changes her life forever. Her mother ships her off to Shadow Falls—a camp for troubled teens, and within hours of arriving, it becomes painfully clear that her fellow campers aren’t just “troubled.” Here at Shadow Falls, vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, witches and fairies train side by side—learning to harness their powers, control their magic and live in the normal world.
Kylie’s never felt normal, but surely she doesn’t belong here with a bunch of paranormal freaks either. Or does she? They insist Kylie is one of them, and that she was brought here for a reason. As if life wasn’t complicated enough, enter Derek and Lucas. Derek’s a half-fae who’s determined to be her boyfriend, and Lucas is a smokin’ hot werewolf with whom Kylie shares a secret past. Both Derek and Lucas couldn’t be more different, but they both have a powerful hold on her heart.
Even though Kylie feels deeply uncertain about everything, one thing is becoming painfully clear—Shadow Falls is exactly where she belongs…

I really hope you give these books a chance, they are worth it.

Book Recommendation: Fantasy

Why do people read books? Have you ever wondered about it? Does this sound like an infomercial?

I've been a dedicated reader since I was a child. I owe it to my mom, who would buy me a box full of books every month, literally. As I grew older, and life became more complicated, books were my source of escape. I would sit all day in my room, alone, and submerge into the lives of people I didn't know. One of the best genres to do so is fantasy, where worlds are completely different from our own; worlds filled with mythological creatures and magic. So today, I decided I would recommend some of my favorite fantasy books.

Bare in mind that I'm trying to avoid the popular fantasy series, okay? So don't get angry, Potterheads.

I'm a very organized person, or at least I like to pretend like I am. So I'm going to divide it into sections.

High-Fantasy

Any Sarah J Maas book. Go to your nearest bookstore, pick a SJM book (if you haven't already) and read it. You won't regret it.
Get lost in these worlds filled with strong, hilarious and very morally-conflicted characters. Oh, and there are some highly attractive faes in there too.

A Court of Thorns and Roses is a Beauty and the Beast retelling. We follow Feyre, a 19-year-old huntress, who after killing a white wolf, is taken prisoner to a world of faes she's never seen before.
I didn't particularly love this book, though I was surprised at how much stuff happened in it. You'll definitely want to check book 2 (💜) but, trust me on this one, wait till book 3 is out.

Paranormal

When people say paranormal, most of us imagine werewolves and vampires (team Jacob btw). Well, guess what? There's a whole world out there of paranormal books without either. I only have one for you today, though.

I wouldn't know how to describe this book other than to say that it's amazing. So here's a short part of the premise: “There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.” Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her. This is book 1 of the Raven Cycle series.

This book has the more typical elements of paranormal novels, but I can assure you that you won't get bored. This is a 6-book-series that follows our main character Kylie Galen who, after a party gone wrong, is sent to a summer camp for troubled teens. It turns out, the kids are definitely troubled, but not in the way you'd think. I remember when I read these; devoured might be a better term.

Sci-fi

I have a curse
I have a gift

I am a monster
I'm more than human

My touch is lethal
My touch is power

I am their weapon
I will fight back

Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days.

Go ahead and tell me that it's not awesome. You can't, can you? I'd say that this is more of a dystopian, but it's debatable. All you need to know's that it's fantastic and so are the other 2 books.

Romance

Ironically, Delirium takes place in a world where love is considered a disease. But what'll happen when with ninety-five days left until her treatment, Lena, our main character, meets enigmatic Alex? Nothing too dramatic, right?
While I LOVED the first book, the second one bored me to death and couldn't get past the first 30 pages.

Mythological

This book is not only a pretty cover, it's also a great take on the Persephone and Hades myth. We follow Kate, a teenager who moves back to her old town as her mother's last wish. There, she meets the only person who might be able to help her mother, but not without something in return.

Yup, perfect description.

Magic

I've never read this trilogy, but my friends keep recommending it. It's the "Harry Potter for adults" apparently, not that there's anything wrong with reading HP in your twenties (me).

Like everyone else, precocious high school senior Quentin Coldwater assumes that magic isn't real, until he finds himself admitted to a very secretive and exclusive college of magic in upstate New York. After graduation, he and his friends stumble upon a secret that sets them on a remarkable journey that may just fulfill Quentin's yearning. But their journey turns out to be darker and more dangerous than they'd imagined.

Those are all my recommendations for today, folks. Happy reading!

Have you read any of these books? Is there any hidden fantasy gem I should read? Let me know in the comments!
