Red Carpet Book Tag

Well, award season is over and we have to give the crown to the Golden Globes... oh wait, it seems there's been a mistake, the crown goes to the Academy Awards. Whether you think it was staged or not, no one from the audience saw that grand ending coming.

My mom and I love watching red carpets together; we love criticizing what people are wearing, it has become a hobby after so many years (I blame it on Project Runway). And after seeing all those great and not so great looks I decided to create a book tag: the Red Carpet Book Tag. Sounds fancy, right?

All you have to do is pick your favorite looks from this year's red carpets and pick a book that goes along with each outfit. It could be a look that reminds you of a scene, a character, or just the cover itself.

Let's get straight into it!

1) Ruth Negga

I remember the old days, when I started watching Marvel's Agents of Shield. I remember Ruth, who played the role of a lady in a flower dress for many episodes. Well, flower dresses no more, it's the Golden Globes, baby!

The first thing that comes to mind when I look at this dress is robots. Or the 2016 Met Gala. Is this appropriate for the Golden Globes? I don't know. I'm not Tim Gunn, but I like it. And for the robot theme, I picked Cinder by Marissa Meyer. I know I know, Cinder is a Cyborg, not a robot... details.

2) Kirsten Dunst

I've always liked Kirsten, there's something about her face that, depending on her make up choice, makes her look like a sweet angel or a straight up demon that's looking for revenge. When it comes to fashion, she may not always make the best choices... but, she did quite good with this one.

It's easy to find a cover with a girl in a dress, especially in YA. So I just picked one of the many many options: Sweet Peril by Wendy Higgins. This is the sequel to Sweet Evil, which I actually read but don't remember a single thing about.

3) Taraji P. Henson

Everybody loves Taraji, literally. I bet you can't name 5 people who don't, come on, I dare you. Isn't she amazing on Hidden Figures? I haven't seen it yet, but that's what I've heard. This woman can do no wrong, and it applies to fashion. She's always one of the best dressed, in my opinion. Simple and classy (some people could learn a thing or two from her).

When I look at this dress all I can think about is: Angelina Jolie. And when I think about Angelina, I think about spies, and Brad Pitt, but mainly spies. I can't think of spies and not think about Casino Royale by Ian Fleming. Plus, the dress matches the cover quite nicely.

4) Karlie Kloss

No matter what she's wearing, whether it is a garbage bag or her grandma's old curtain, Karlie always looks flawless. Of course, that has a lot to do with the fact that she's, you know, a supermodel. Her taste in fashion is impeccable. Hey, Karlie, I know I'm lacking a few inches but do you think I could join the T-Squad? No? Okay.

Do you know who Karlie reminds me of? Ianthe from ACOTAR by Sarah J. Maas. Now, I'm not saying she's a b**** or anything. It's just that she always looks like she's plotting something. She's always squinting her eyes, maybe they're like that, but it makes me uneasy. Since Ianthe is a *spoilers* manipulative piece of sh** who's always plotting something *end of spoilers*, I thought it was quite fitting. Also, the cape.

5) Zoe Saldana

We haven't seen Zoe in many red carpets, and when we have, she didn't really impress with her choices. I hope that this dress is the first of many good choices. I think this is fresh and untypical. It reminds me of those throw pillows that change colors when you rub them in a certain direction.

I bet you're starting to see the pattern here, I love simple and well-fitted outfits.

This dress was quite easy for me to relate. I already had the cover of Pierce Brown's new book, Iron Gold, on the back of my mind.

6) Lily Collins

Oh, Lily Collins, look at you being nominated among Meryl Streep. I really like her, she seems like a very down to earth girl, so good for her. She usually wears unconventional and edgy outfits, which I love. This time, she channeled her inner Snow White from Mirror Mirror. And it looks stunning.

As soon as I saw this dress, my mind went "what's the name of that book with the girl in the dress upside down?". Of course, googling "girl in dress book cover" didn't help. Finally, it came to me: The Winner's Curse by Marie Rutkoski. It's like the same dress, almost. On point, Martina. Oh stop it, you're too sweet.

7) Evan Rachel Wood

I remember watching Evan when she was little (I promise it's not creepy) in Little Secrets. I watched that movie 15 times, at least. Look at her now, in big shows like Westworld, doing great. I admire her for staying true to herself and not giving a sh** about other people's opinion. And in doing so, she still manages to look awesome.

"You don't have to wear one (a dress) if you don't want to," ... "just be yourself because your worth is more than that." With that said, Evan reminds me of Celaena from the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas. Not only because she's badass and strong, but also because she isn't afraid to be herself.

8) Mandy Moore

Who didn't cry while watching a Walk to Remember? You're lying if you say you didn't. And remember how her character always wore those ugly sweaters? Those days ar far behind cause Mandy looks BOMB in this dress. Also, I've heard her show This Is Us is doing really good, so congrats, Mandy.

Yes, I know, I already used Acotar, but doesn't her dress look a lot like the one on the cover? Without the scales and the fur/feathers and the tattoo, she looks just like Feyre. If someone ever buys the rights to these books, I think Mandy has a good chance of playing her.

9) Meryl Streep

What can I say about Meryl that hasn't already been said? She's one of the most talented, inspiring and amazing woman in Hollywood. Do you know what's more incredible than that? Meryl has been to countless awards and she still rocks every red carpet, in heels might I add.

Now this is a good one, I promise. Everyone can see the resemblance right? The shade of blue, the embellishments, etc. But here's the metaphorical resemblance: can you see the pants under the skirt? Barely, right? They're trying to deceive you, create an illusion. They're pretending to not be there, just like a magician would in his tricks. Yeah, I know that Caraval by Stephanie Garber is about a circus. But, from what I've heard, it seems like once you enter, you can't tell what's real and what's not. Dun dun duuun.

10) Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds

Blake and Ryan have always been my favorite Hollywood couple, but they were shaded by Brangelina. Unless you've been living under a rock for the past year and a half, then you know that B+A no longer exists. It's Blyan's (Rylake?) turn to shine. Aren't they perfect?

Why am I pairing them with a book about 12 year-old demigods, might you think? Well, I think Percabeth (Percy and Annabeth) from the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan would look just like them in the future. Not just in looks, we all know how sassy, smart and essentially hilarious P & A are so... I think it's a perfect match. Don't you?

You could probably end it here if you like even numbers, but I'm going to add a bonus.

11) Queen Emma Stone

Emma has come a long way since her Superbad and Zombieland days. She's made us laugh in the House Bunnies and Easy A (my all-time favorite chick-flick) but also made us think in the Help. She has not only won an Oscar and several other awards, but also the honor of beating legendary Meryl Streep. What's also impressive is she always looks flawless and ethereal. The Golden Globes were no exception.

"Ugh, here she comes again with SJM." Okay, but hear me out. I think Emma in this Lanvin dress is straight-up taken out of the Velaris starfall scene from ACOMAF by Sarah J. Maas. No more words needed.

She even got her Oscar from LEO DICAPRIO. So lucky.

I really hope you enjoyed my rambling as much as I enjoyed writing it cause, boy, it took me a while.

Do you agree with my choices? Am I not the first to do this tag and I look like a complete fool right now? What would you have picked? Let me know in the comments.

Q&A: International Women's Day

Happy International Women's day to all the brave women out there 💪

"'The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights,' says world-renowned feminist, journalist and social and political activist Gloria Steinem. Thus International Women's Day is all about unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy and action - whatever that looks like globally at a local level. But one thing is for sure, International Women's Day has been occurring for well over a century - and continue's to grow from strength to strength."

I'm not a feminist but I stand behind many of the feminism movement's goals. I'm sure that the world can be a more inclusive place for everyone if we all collaborate, but it seems that a lot of people are too comfortable where they are right now. So it's up to us, women, to make the change.

For International Women's Day 2017, we're asking you to #BeBoldForChange.
Call on the masses or call on yourself to help forge a better working world - a more gender inclusive world.
Submit your #BeBoldForChange action via the IWD website.

In honor of IWD, I decided to do a *Q&A on a related subject.

1º What's a female author you admire?

I admire any author who dares to share the truth with the world. Those who give a voice to the minorities, represent them, and let them know that they're as important as anyone else. It's ironic that there are too many inspiring authors to list, yet not enough.

2º What's an underrated female author that, according to you, is going to take over the world?

Well, she's not really underrated anymore, but I think everyone should know about her: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. I also think Zadie Smith is an incredibly smart woman, but her books are not for everyone.

“It's a funny thing about the modern world. You hear girls in the toilets of clubs saying, "Yeah, he fucked off and left me. He didn't love me. He just couldn't deal with love. He was too fucked up to know how to love me." Now, how did that happen? What was it about this unlovable century that convinced us we were, despite everything, eminently lovable as a people, as a species? What made us think that anyone who fails to love us is damaged, lacking, malfunctioning in some way? And particularly if they replace us with a god, or a weeping madonna, or the face of Christ in a ciabatta roll---then we call them crazy. Deluded. Regressive. We are so convinced of the goodness of ourselves, and the goodness of our love, we cannot bear to believe that there might be something more worthy of love than us, more worthy of worship. Greeting cards routinely tell us everybody deserves love. No. Everybody deserves clean water. Not everybody deserves love all the time.”

3º A book written by a female author that you loved or struck you in some way.

That book is The Survival Kit by Donna Freitas. It's the only book that I've read twice in my life. The reason this book stuck to me so much is that at the time of reading it, I was going through a tough time and I felt truly close to the main character, Rose. If you don't like books that could potentially make you cry, then this is not for you. But for all of you who want to read a compellingly well-written story... you won't regret it.

4º Female characters that you admire.

Well, I'm going to agree with the girls who created this Q&A on this one. Although she's not a character, I think a very inspiring person was Anne Frank. I can only begin to imagine the strength and guts she must've had to endure her situation at such a young age. Admiration is too small of a word for her.

Here come the more lighthearted questions...

5º Favorite female booktuber.

I tend to watch confident booktubers who won't sugarcoat a review to try and please publishers. Here are a few:
  • Lala from BooksandLala (I always look forward to her thoughts on books. You should check her Judge a Book by it's Cover Challenge)
  • Hannah Tay (Love her sense of humor and wide taste in books)
  • Naya from NayaReadsandSmiles (She has never ending energy!)
  • Regan from PeruseProject (I love how straightforward she is, plus we have the same taste in books)
  • Piera Forde (She's probably my fave booktuber. Love her creativity)
  • Zoe from readbyzoe (She brings amazing arguments to her reviews)

6º Female antagonist you fear the most.

Uhm, I'm not going to try to be creative here: Dolores Umbridge. She's a pretty nasty and scary tiny little woman.
Not only her fetiche for cats and obsession with pink are creepy, but she also has that borderline-psychopath face.
*shivers*

7º Female character you wish was your friend.

Definitely Lysandra from the Throne of Glass series. She's not only strong and smart but she's also a fantastic friend. I would love to have her by my side.

8º Female character you consider to be the smartest.

For this one I'm going with Portia from The Merchant of Venice (no need to name the author, right?). For a woman to be this relevant in a plot was unspeakable at the time. So I have to thank Shakespeare for bringing to life such a strong, independent and smart character. You'll have to read it to see what I mean.

So there you have it. I Hope you enjoyed it!

Graphic Novel Review: Lady Mechanika #0 by Joe Benítez

Lady Mechanika #0 by Joe Benítez

Release day: October 2015
Publisher: Aspen
Pages: 25
Source: free on Amazon
Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Summary

The mysteries surrounding private investigator LADY MECHANIKA and her origin begin to unfold as she heads to a rundown city known as Satan's Alley. Located on the lower eastside, it is an area of town under siege by the presence of a murderous creature of unknown origin. While a weapons manufacturer has issued a reward for the unknown slayer, drawing a crowd of bounty hunters looking to cash in, Lady Mechanika's purpose is far more personal - information that could lead to the truth about her creation.

Review

Action-packed and off to a fantastic start

I know what you're thinking, and no, I'm not a fortuneteller: Why are you writing a review of a 25 paged issue? Well, first of all, it's MY blog. Second of all, it's like REALLY good. Third of all, it's available for free on Amazon! Yup, you're welcome. See? I told you I knew what you were thinking.

I dived into this with high expectations due to it's many great reviews and it didn't disappoint. I'm barely dipping my toes into the world of graphic novels, but man, I'm doing great so far.

We follow the story of a pirate-esque looking woman with mechanical body parts (I guess she's a cyborg then?) who is trying to figure out her past. We don't get much info out of this short issue; if anything, it raises a lot of questions and makes us crave more.

Just in case 💕

Story: There's a lot of intrigue that definitely hooks the reader into getting the next issue. I found the story very interesting with just enough characters so as to not be confusing. Even though I understand that this is short for a reason, it did feel a little rushed.

Artwork: I really really dig this type of dark illustration, and I definitely dig the steampunk theme. Don't you think the color palette goes perfectly with the whole theme? Cause I do. I just love the overall style and how Lady Mechanika manages to be girly yet super badass.

This is what I think happens every time Lady Machanika is in front of a mirror 👆

Overall

I think it's a solid starter point and I'll definitely have to check out the rest of Joe's work.

Have you checked the rest of Lady Mechanika out? Is it as great as issue #0? Let me know in the comments.

Book to Movie Monday #1: Before I Fall

Book to Movie Monday #1

Title: Before I Fall
Author: Lauren Oliver
Publication Date: October 25th 2010

Review from Goodreads:

With this stunning debut novel, New York Times bestselling author Lauren Oliver emerged as one of today's foremost authors of young adult fiction. Before I Fall raises thought-provoking questions about love, death, and how one person's life can affect so many others.

For popular high school senior Samantha Kingston, February 12—"Cupid Day"—should be one big party, a day of valentines and roses and the privileges that come with being at the top of the social pyramid. And it is…until she dies in a terrible accident that night.

However, she still wakes up the next morning. In fact, Sam lives the last day of her life seven times, until she realizes that by making even the slightest changes, she may hold more power than she ever imagined.

Book to Movie Monday is where I write about books that are being, have been or I would like to see adapted.

As this is the first time I do this, I want to start with one of the most talked about 2017 adaptations.
I can't seem to avoid advertisement for this movie, maybe it's because I follow the main actress on instagram... hmm.

I haven't read this book yet, but all the buzz surrounding the movie makes me kinda want to check it out. The author is the one that really makes me doubt since I've had some troubles with the Delirium trilogy.

The movie

This movie was released quite recently, on March 3rd to be precise, and it has a 68% on Rotten Tomatoes. Not that bad, right?

Zoey Deutch embodies the main role. We've seen her in Vampire Academy too, and even though the movie didn't do so well (I, personally, liked it), I think she nailed her acting. Let's hope she does as good on this one.

Among Zoey's co-stars we have Halston Sage, Logan Miller and, Youtube star, Kian Lawley.

The trailer looks great, I'll leave the link here for you to judge.

Guess I'll have to wait till it's released in Argentina (ugh, third world problems).

Fun fact

Did you know that Before I Fall is not the first adapted book by Lauren Oliver?
In fact, Delirium was going to become a TV show, they even filmed the pilot and everything (I got to see it when it was still available online, it wasn't THAT bad). Apparently something went wrong because it never got picked up. You can still find some clips online.

Have you seen the movie already? Let me know what you thought in the comments!

Bye bye! ✌

Graphic Novel Review: Arclight by Brandon Graham and Marian Churchland

Arclight by
Brandon Graham and Marian Churchland

Release Day: March 28th 2017
Publisher: Image Comics
Pages: 128
Source: Issues 1-4 available on Edelweiss + for free.
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Summary

From Goodreads:

A lady of the blood house has had her mind trapped in a strange alien body. Hiding on the outskirts of her kingdom until she learns that an alien monster pretending to be her taken her place. Brandon Graham and Marian Churchland bring you sharp genderqueer knights, blood magic, death gods, astral projection, and a goose.

Review

I got my hands on this beauty, as I said, from Edelweiss+. I was just scrolling down through the selection of review copies and I saw this graphic novel. I'm not too sure of what caught my eye; If we're being honest, the cover is not that appealing. I guess it was the "fantasy" tag, cause I hadn't even read the premise, that lured me into downloading it. Oh, and the fact that I didn't have to request a copy to check it out also helped (thanks for that, btw). I'm so glad I did.

This was my first experience with graphic novels. For real. I've always wanted to check them out but never did for some reason. WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU, MARTINA? I read it sooo quickly, and loved it so much. I can't even begin to describe how thrilled I am to continue reading 'em. I owe it all to Arclight.

Let's dive into it

Story: I found it confusing at times. Had I read the summary from goodreads before jumping into it, maybe I would have understood it a bit more. But where's the fun in that? My ONLY issue with it, was that Lady's story was a bit disorienting... *Spoilers* the back and forth between Lady's mind in the alien's body and the Alien's mind in Lady's body confused me a lot at the beginning and made me think it was a memory of the past. *end of Spoilers* The idea or concept of the story was really good, I really enjoyed it. So, well done Brandon (I can call you Brandon, right?).

Characters: I understand, that you can't do much in 120 pages, but I felt that the characters lacked, well, character. I didn't really feel like any of them had personality, except for maybe Nowak (who was obnoxious but in a good way). In fact, I think the character with the best personality was Goose. Love that little guy, he definitely had a lot to say.

Artwork: HOLY MOTHER OF JESUS. The art is UN-FREAKING-BELIEVABLE. Dear, Marian Churchland, I'm your number 1 fan now. Keep the good stuff coming. Thank you.

I'll insert some so you see what I'm screaming about:

The color palette, the "drawn" feel with the thin strokes, just the world design is amazing. 10/10.

Some good stuff:

  • Genderqueer. I was pleasantly surprised by this. I think it's great to have characters who don't identify with either gender. This allows them to not be so stereotyped.
  • Have I mentioned the artwork yet? Oh I have? Well, it's amazing.
  • I laughed so hard with this:

 Final Thoughts

I really really enjoyed it and has opened me the world of graphic novels. I definitely recommend it, specially since it's available free of charge (you need to have an Edelweiss+ account). Hope you check it out!

Book Review: Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake

Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake

Release Day: September 20th 2016
Publisher: HarperTeen
Pages: 416 pages
Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Summary

From Goodreads:

Every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins. The last queen standing gets the crown.

With alliances being formed, betrayals taking shape, and ruthless revenge haunting the queens’ every move, one thing is certain: the last queen standing might not be the strongest…but she may be the darkest.

Review

If you haven't heard of this book before then, where have you been? It's been all over Youtube for months now.
As a lot of us do, I take recommendations from Booktube and they usually don't disappoint but this time... well, before getting into this, let me give you MY small summary.

We meet these 3 potential queens who will have to fight each other till death for the throne. Wait, did I forget to mention they are SISTERS? Like, damn. We're introduced to their magical world, more like thrown into a pool, and get to meet their families and friends. Their whole lives, they've been preparing for their sixteenth birthday, the night of the sororicide (yes, I googled it), yet it seems that 2 out of the 3 are not prepared at all. What could go wrong, right?

When I first heard of it, it sounded incredible. A fight between siblings for the throne and there's magic mixed in? I'm SOLD.

Let's break it down, shall we?
Story: The premise is amazing, and there was soooo much potential for this book. What killed it for me was that it takes FOREVER to get to the interesting part. I started this book in November. IT TOOK ME ALMOST 4 MONTHS TO FINISH IT. I read the last 150 pages in like 2 hours, cause that's where the good stuff was.

Characters: You love some, you hate some, you admire some. None of them stuck to me though, and that's why I won't go into too much detail. Personally, my faves are Katherine and Junior. I'm definitely intrigued by Pietyr, what's with the down the rabbit hole scene??? I really hate Madrigal and Mirabella, but mostly Madrigal. There's just no explanation to how she acts, one moment she's trying to help her daughter or Arsinoe and the next she's being a worthless shitty person.

Writing: I had so much trouble with the amount of points of view. It's not like I'm stupid (careful there) but it's really confusing to jump into a book and have to read from not only 3 different people who live in different parts of the world, but also read from all the people who are around the main characters. It was just too much, and it didn't give you the time to actually connect with them. I also had an issue with the amount of action. There was way too much talking and not enough doing.

You're probably wondering, then why did you rate it 3.5 stars? Well.

The good stuff:
We can always find light even in the darkness of times, oh wait that's not how it goes... sorry Dumbledore.

First of all the cover LIKE OMG LOOK AT IT. I'm serious, look at it:

It
showcases
perfectly
what
the
book's
about.

What really did it for me though, were the last 100 pages. All the action and twists I was looking for, happened there. Some of them were predictable (the bear scene), some shocked me (rabbit hole scene) but I was definitely pleased.

THAT ENDING THO: I did NOT see that coming, like at all. I did begin to notice the subtle hints throughout the novel once I finished the book.*spoilers* The Arsinoe-Kat thing, well fuck. Also, when Kat reappeared I was like YAS QUEEN, SLAY. *end of spoilers*

Some stuff:
SPOILERS will be mentioned. You've been warned.
  • I'm thinking that Kat's snake was her familiar, but since it died and was replaced... what will happen?
  • Does Pietyr by any chance know about Arsinoe and Katherine? I suspect he does.
  • Mirabella and Joseph. I hope they run away and never come back. I hope the bear eats them too.
Final Thoughts

Did I enjoy the book? I enjoyed some parts of it.
Do I recommend it? I do, specially to those who aren't bothered by slow moving plots.
Will I read the second book? Probably, I'll wait till some reviews are out and see if it's worth reading. I hope it gets better. The ending intrigued me enough. Yeah, I'll check it out (don't you love how I'm trying to convince myself to read it?).

Rating

3.5 out of 5 stars

Did you love or hate this book? Cause there seems to be no in between. Tell me your thoughts in the comments!

Update

Hello there!

So, since this blog is about reviews (mainly), I've been trying to get my hands on some Arcs. It's always exciting to have access to books not many people have read. The good news is that thanks to LibraryThing I was able to get not one, but TWO. Isn't that awesome? I know! Ok, enough rambling. I introduce you to:

Behind the Mask by Kelly Link, Cat Rambo, Carrie Vaughn, Seanan McGuire, Lavie Tidhar and Sarah Pinsker. Edited by Tricia Reeks and Kyle Richardson.

Behind the Mask is an exciting collection of short stories about the everyday lives of superheroes. Ranging from laugh-out-loud funny to decliciously dark, these stories are about the ordinary day-to-day challenges facing these extraordinary individuals―growing up, growing old, relationships, parenting, coping with that age-old desire to fit in when, let’s face it, they don’t.

Rebel Flight by Mindy Klasky

In the sheltered village of Silver Hollow, Keara knows exactly what is expected of her: Worship the twelve gods, pay the Primate his head tax, and follow her mother’s unreasonably strict rules. But Keara’s twelfth birthday is looming, along with an obligation she dares not meet. Keara must sacrifice her darkbeast on a holy altar or be branded a heretic forever.

Other children despise their bonded scapegoat animals. But Keara loves her raven, Caw. He’s the only creature in Silver Hollow who truly understands her headstrong ways.

When a traveling theater troupe passes through the village, Keara glimpses a way to escape. But the Great Road comes with its own dangers, including dread Inquisitor priests who hunt down infidels.

Will Keara find the strength to flee the only home she’s ever known? Or will she be forced to slay her closest friend on the altar of the gods?

DON'T THEY SOUND FANTASTIC?😄Okay, I may be a bit too excited.

Expect reviews in the near future.
